Poetry Friday: The Early Bird

Still dark, and raining hard
on a cold May morning

and yet the early bird
is out there chirping,

chirping its sweet-sour
wooden-pulley notes,

pleased, it would seem,
to be given work,

hauling the heavy bucket of dawn

up from the darkness,
note over note,

and letting us drink.

Love this! Thanks for sharing. The first thing I do in the mornings is see who's up and about outside by their chirps. (And most are up before I am, for sure.)
The image is great, too.

This poem explains why I always have breakfast on the 4-season porch. It's the sounds: rain on the roof, squirrels chasing through dry leaves, and the birds...

So simple, yet so effective. Kooser is a wonder. Are you familiar with his book, Valentines. They're little poems that fit on a postcard. Very nice.

Isn't this poem just perfect for May. It gets better and better until the gorgeous end!

Re: (Oh, Ted. I love you so.) ...me, too. I have to admit to a little YAY! in my head when I saw from your link that I would find Ted Kooser here! I have been listening to those "wooden-pulley notes" as I worked my way through the roundup this morning!!

Kooser keeps it short and sweet and just nails the images here. I love that about his work. Thank you for sharing!

and letting us drink.

Yes, such beautiful imagery. Such power.

Hauling the heavy bucket of dawn. Amazing. Who else would think of dawn and so substantial, so heavy. And Kooser makes the thought work beautifully.

I love waking to the sounds of birds in the morning. I miss the birds when winter comes.
